- Story Text: A new device demonstrated at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci Airport on Tuesday (20 June) is able to detect nay metallic contents in passenger luggage. As an item of baggage passes the device on a conveyor it is scanned electronically, and a still picture of the contents displayed on a television monitor screen until the next piece of baggage passes. The detector has been specially developed to cope with the increasing number of bomb and hijacking attempts on passenger aircraft. A modification of the detector, meanwhile, is shaped like a narrow archway or frame, through which a passenger walks. Any firearms or metal hidden on his person is then quickly revealed on a screen. The invention was referred to by Italian officials after the shooting of civilians at Lydda Airport, Israel, earlier this month. Then, they said they hoped to unveil a device which might have prevented such an incident.
The United Nations' Security Council, meanwhile, in a statement issued on Tuesday (21 June), condemned actions "directed against the safety of civil aviation" and called on states to "take measures to prevent them, and to deal with those who commit such acts".
