- Story Text: An Arab League delegation is holding talks with
Iraqi officials in Baghdad; new police officers graduate
from academy.
A delegation from the powerful Arab League visited
Baghdad on Saturday (December 20) to hold talks with Iraqi
officials and Iraq's U.S.-backed Governing Council.
The delegation, headed by assistant secretary general
for political affairs Ahmed Helli, met with the Iraqi
foreign ministry officials before
heading to the interior ministry to meet the minister.
Ahmed bin Helli said that the delegation was visiting
Iraq "to see what's going on in Iraq...and to see how we
can help the Iraqi people and what the Arab league and Arab
countries can offer Iraq."
The delegation's visit is a sign that tensions have
eased since the Cairo-based organisation said it would not
recognise Iraq's new government.
Arab countries have recently welcomed the capture of
the former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and said it has
to be the first step towards transferring power to the
Iraqi people.
Many Arab states have publicly refused to accept the
25-member council, set up by U.S. administrators in July as
an interim authority after
American-led forces brought down former Iraqi President
Saddam Hussein's rule.
Meanwhile, a graduation ceremony took place in Baghdad
on Saturday for new police recruits.
Deputy Interior Minister Ahmad Kathem congratulated the
graduates and pinned stars on their shoulders.
The trainees are graduating at a time when police seem
to have become targets for much of the insurgent activity.
Suicide bombers have staged several attacks on Iraqi police
to punish them for working with American soldiers, who hope
to hand over security to the Iraqis. Some 116 Iraqi
policemen and security forces have been killed since May 1.
And, in a sign of the continuing violence gripping
Iraq, hundreds of Shi'ite Muslims marched in Baghdad on
Saturday to protest the assassination of a Shi'ite leader
three days ago.
Muhannad al-Hakim, a representative of a major Shi'ite
party and a member of a prominent political family, was
shot dead on December 17 in Baghdad.
Al-Hakim, a member of the Supreme Council for the
Islamic Revolution in Iraq, was killed Wednesday while
leaving his home, party official Latif al-Rubaie said.
Al-Hakim, in his mid-30s, was head of security at the
Education Ministry and was a cousin of Abdel-Aziz al-Hakim,
who currently holds the rotating presidency of the
U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council.
