- Story Text: One of Iraq's top Shi'ite clerics, Ayatollah Mohammed
Baqir al-Hakim, is due to arrive in Najaf.
Supporters of the Shi'ite cleric gathered in Najaf on
Monday (May 12), hanging banners to welcome his arrival.
On the city streets and in its coffee houses, the subject
of Hakim dominated many conversations.
"Hakim's system is the best for us we know the suffering
he went through during his exile. We know the damage that was
done to Hakim's family and the sacrifices that they made," )
said Sahib al-Ghalabi.
In another corner of the city, residents attended the
funeral of a Najaf sheikh.
The scenes of religious students surrounding the coffin as
it was carried through the streets caused some to contemplate
the type of life they would like to lead.
"We want a government that will satisfy the people,
satisfy our society and our Islamic society. We don't want any
trouble, we just want a just and democratic government and we
want a fair life," said Abdel Amir al Mouthawi, ahead of
Hakim's arrival.
Hakim's triumphant return to Iraq on Saturday (May 10)
signals a jostling for position by the influential cleric, who
was jailed and tortured in the 1970s for opposing Saddam, has
headed SCIRI since 1980 in exile in Iran.
His close ties to Iran and the armed militia known as the
Badr Forces which he commands have aroused some alarm in
Washington, but he has sought to play down those fears.
His powerful Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in
Iraq (SCIRI) belongs to a U.S.-backed Iraqi council which
meets regularly to map out a future government post-Saddam.
