Dogs sweat through their feet so it is nice for the dog to keep the hair there short so the sweat can go through. If the hair is tangled the dog can not sweat. People also take their dogs more often for a swim, short hair is then convenient to check the animal for fleas and ticks. So a lot of people come now for the summer style, everything short." - Story Text: Dutch dogs keep cool with hats and sunglasses as the
Netherlands experiences the hottest summer since 1947.
Sunglasses, cage coolers and the latest season's
hairstyle have brought new meaning to the phrase "dog days
of summer" in the Netherlands.
As a heat wave rolls across the country, Dutch pet
owners are shopping to protect their beloved animals from
the sweltering heat and burning sun.
Pet store Super Dieren Land (Super Animal Land) in
Rotterdam said the sizzling heat has sparked a run for all
sorts of luxury products designed to keep a pet cool.
The most wanted item is the Body Cool Bandana which
cost between 23.50 and 34 euros (26.50 and 38 U.S.
dollars), a cotton scarf with moisture-absorbing kernels to
chill the main artery in the pet's neck. Placing the
bandana in cold water for 15 minutes supposedly keeps the
pet cool for five days.
Other popular items are Dog Cool Mats which cost up to
129.50 euros (146 U.S. dollars), made from the same
moisture kernels, Cage Cool ventilators, dog hats and
sunglasses which cost around 80 euros (90 U.S. dollars).
"With this heat we are really flooded with calls from
people who are trying to find solutions to keep their pets
cool. They are looking for products to protect their pets
from the heat," said salesman Willem Plaizier.
Canine hair saloons are also doing big business with
more people taking their pets for a summer cut.
"With this warm weather clients come much more often,
for instance to get the hair on dogs' feet cut. Dogs sweat
through their feet so it is nice for the dog to keep the
hair there short so the sweat can go through. If its hair
is tangled the dog cannot sweat. People also take their
dogs more often for a swim, and short hair is then
convenient to check the animal
for flees and ticks. So a lot of people come now for the
summer style, everything short," said Monique Kuiper of
Happy Dogs Hair Saloon in Amsterdam. With more sun
fo
recasted in the coming week, cool dogs
have nothing to sweat over.
