- Story Text: Experts may say that lava flows spewing from Mount Etna
are slowing down, but up close to the erupting fissures the
force of Mother Nature is still an impressive sight to behold.
Europe's most active volcano had far from finished its
spectacular display on Tuesday (October 30) evening. 2,100
metres above sea level on the side of Mount Etna it is like
entering a surreal battle ground.
The earth around the volcanos eight fissures trembles
under foot as fountains of fire up to 100 metres high are shot
into the sky. Huge rocks whistle through the air as they are
hurled from the volcanos innards and left to drop from great
heights onto the red-hot flows of lava moving down the
mountain.
Clouds of black smoke billow out from the cracks as
Etna tries to release its fiery load of molten rock. It is as
though an incessant exchange of artillery fire is taking place
on the mountian as the constant booming fills the night air.
No-one pretends to really understand what Mount Etna
will decide to do next although experts believe the eruptions
may be slowing down.
"It seems now as if only one of the mouths is actually
pouring lava, and if it continues like this it means the
eruption has a short life, but this eruption has got us used
to ups and downs on a daily basis," said Etna guide Orazio di
Stefano who has been watching the volcanos activity since
1983.
Etna has been showing off its force since Sunday
(October 27) when seismic activity in the area jolted it
awake. Since then eight fissures have opened up in a line
along the mountain ridge spewing out the flame-red lava in a
constant display of impressive energy.
Experts say there is now little danger of towns and
villages becoming engulfed by the boiling flows moving down
the mountain, partly due to the numbers of cracks which are
now emitting the lava. The fissures act as vents allowing the
volcano to let off steam, releasing pressure at regular
intervals instead of allowing it to build up and produce a
massive explosion.
