- Story Text: A group of anti-G8 demonstrators has stripped off on
the shores of Lake Geneva to protest against the summit of
world leaders due to take place across the lake in the French
resort town of Evian.
Around 20 naked protesters took to the water of Lake
Geneva on Saturday (May 31) to protest against the G8 and the
privatisation of water.
Shouting 'Water for all, stop G8' they stripped off in the
Swiss sunshine, much to the amusement of passers-by, and
plunged into the icy water of the lake.
"We are protesting against privatisation. Privatisation of
services, privatisation in this case of water. The people
don't have access to water any more, which is a basic life
essence," said one of the protesters.
The 'Jet d'eau' fountain, Geneva's most famous landmark,
was turned off as the protesters approached.
"This is a topic at the G8 conference, and in more and
more developing countries, people privatise their water
supplies, which means that you have to pay for water," said
one protester, swimming in the water.
She saw symbolism in the decision to turn the fountain
off.
"Obviously in many developing countries people cannot pay.
So we took the fountain, which is the symbol of the city of
Geneva and free water, normally, but they turned it off when
we came around. So now it seems that we have to pay for it,"
she said.
The G8 summit of industrialised countries takes place in
Evian, France from June 1-3.
Prevented from entering Evian itself, many
anti-globalisation protesters have gathered in the Swiss towns
of Geneva and Lausanne, where protests have so far been
largely peaceful.
