- Story Text: Beslan prepares for more burials of siege victims.
Search continues for those still missing in the
Beslan school siege tragedy.
The southern Russian town of Beslan on Tuesday (September 7) will bury
more of the 335 people, half of them children, killed during a chaotic
operation to free them from captors holding them hostage at a local school.
The ruins of School No.1, where more than 1,000 hostages were held for 53
hours, has turned into a memorial, where funeral processions stop on their way
to a new cemetery for the victims and where people come to lay flowers.
Some 207 other bodies are still to be identified. Some reports say there
are more than 200 missing, though officials say the number refers to those
unidentified and does not suggest there will be a big increase in the death
toll.
In Vladikavkaz, the North Ossetian capital, some people continued their
search for the missing loved ones.
"We all knew someone. I'm looking for my cousin. I can't find her. We all
had relatives or at least knew someone," said a Beslan resident Marina, who had
come to Vladikavkaz to continue her search.
Others in the North Ossetian capital prayed for the dead or queued to
donate blood for the hundreds injured in the school storming.
"I am Ossetian. These are my people. Yesterday, we came here with my
friends. They all donated blood, but I was late. I was at the funerals. I must
do it today," said Aslanbek Daskayev.
In Moscow, at least 100,000 people are expected to attend a rally on
Tuesday to denounce terrorism, bolstering President Vladimir Putin against
critics over last week's hostage tragedy.
