- Story Text: Titillating pieces of Playboy action - once discreetly
hidden under men's mattresses - will be available for all to
see. Sexy photographs, cartoons, and artwork, not to mention
of course the 'articles' for the men's magazine will be going
under the hammer at Christie's auction house in New York to
celebrate Playboy's 50th anniversary.
A collection of art, writings and memorabilia from
one of the world's most recognisable magazines, Playboy, is
going under the hammer at Christie's auction house in New
York.
Naughty cartoons and sexy photographs are all in the
Playboy collection - but it's more about fine art than smut.
The iconic mens magazine is auctioning off some of it's
collection to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Playboy. And
the magazine has an impressive array of literary writings,
fine art and memorabilia.
Contributors such as LeRoy Neiman, Alberto Vargas and
Gahan Wilson, Jacques Kerouac and Allen Ginsburg.
Playboy Inc. Chairman and CEO Christie Hefner, daughter of
Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, said the collection s symbolic
of America's cultural evolution from the 1950's through to the
start of the 21st century.
"You can trace everything from the look of beauty to
what's happened in terms of political ideas to what has
happened in terms of style of art because really the magazine
has been a chronicler of the pop culture for all of that
period. So whether it's an Allen Ginsberg or a Jack Kerouac or
Beatles or Mohammed Ali, the magazine and therefore this
collection is kind of a window into the world of America" said
Christie Hefner."
Much of the artwork was specially commissioned by Playboy
to illustrate articles.
Artists like Ed Pashke and LeRoy Neiman were given carte-blanche to
paint various 'bunnies' and famous people.
One of the lots likely to attract a lot of attention is
the Bunny Costume.
The original one from 1953 is on sale and is expected to fetch around
$6,000. There's also a collection of items owned by Hugh Hefner -
including his own "little black books" from 1957 and 1958.
Glossy photographs include the original cover of Playboy
featuring Bo Derek, classic black and white shots of Marilyn
Monroe naked in bed and sexy shots of Cindy Crawford and
Pamela Anderson.
Andrea Fiuczynski, President of Christie's in L.A and
auctioneer for the December sale said the collection is about
far more than simple 'smut.'
She said, "It's important to note that Playboy is a
lifestyle magazine and lifestyle encompasses nudity and
sexuality, as does the art world and art history. Look at
antiquity to contemporary both categories throughout the
decades and the centuries embrace art and sexuality. Think of
Etruscan vases, think of current cutting edge photography. So
we see nudity and we see sexuality."
Advanced proofs of sections from "On Her Majesty's Secret
Service," published in Playboy in 1963, with notations by the
author, were estimated to fetch $18,000 to $24,000.
Other items to be auctioned include works by Beat poet
Allen Ginsberg, Henry Miller, Vladimir Nabokov, Jean Paul
Sartre and Hunter S. Thompson and letters from actress Joan
Crawford - a sure that perhaps after all, some of the male
readers did indeed read Playboy for its articles.
In the coming months the collection will travel the United
States and the sale itself will not take place until December
17, in New York.
