It's a good day for multilateralism because the international community stood as one, in addressing what could be a very serious issue with major implications. I hope again that the new chapter that Iran have started in the last few weeks will be sustained. - Story Text: Head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog says he is pleased with IAEA resolution
on Iran's nuclear programme
The head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog said on
Wednesday (November 26) he was pleased with a resolution
from the agency's board of governors that condemned Iran
for past breaches of nuclear non-proliferation but welcomed
Iran's new openness.
"I am very pleased with today's resolution it
strengthens my hand in fulfilling our task in ensuring that
Iran's programme is exclusively for peaceful purpose. It
again as i mentioned, strengthens the case of
non-proliferation in deploring the breach by setting out
the marker for what needs to be done in the future by
making it very clear that any serious violations will not
be tolerated. I hope again that the new chapter that Iran
have started in the last few weeks will be sustained. I
think this is the best way to resolve that issue through
full cooperation and transparency on the part of Iran. I
think if we do then it will be a win win situation for
everybody, Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.
ElBaradei hailed the new IAEA resolution as a positive
step towards non-proliferation and peace.
"It's a good day for peace, it's a good day for
multilateralism, it's a good day for non-proliferation it's
a good day for peace, because the board have decided to
continue to make every effort to to resolve the issue
thr
ough verification and diplomacy. It's a good day for
multilateralism because the international community stood
as one, in addressing what could be a very serious issue
with major implications. It's also a good day for
non-proliferation because the board sent a very powerful
message on the need to respect fully the integrity of the
non-proliferation regime and the non-proliferation treaty."
Iran's representative to the IAEA, Ali Akbar Salehi,
said earlier in the day Iran was committed to signing the
Additional Protocol.
"Certainly we have committed ourselves to sign the
Additional Protocol and that's what we are going to do,"
Salehi said.
