- Story Text: The world's largest jigsaw puzzle featuring a
picture by the German artist Duerer is being put together
in his home town
Roughly 1,700 puzzle pieces, 300 square metres, two
days and two nights - that is it all amounts to when the
the world's largest jigsaw puzzle with a picture by
Albrecht Duerer is put together. The puzzle, featuring
Duerer's 'A Young Venetian Lady', is the highlight of a
weekend in Nuremberg celebrating the 500 years since the
German artist's fruitful trip to Venice.
"It stands out as being the world's biggest
Drer-Puzzle. Spread over three hundred square metres we have a
depictio
n of the "Young Venetian Lady", which has to
be made up from 1,700 single pieces, and we are doing it
here on the St Sebald square in front of the church with
Albrecht Drer had such close contact," said Professor
Julia Lehner, Head of Culture at Nuremberg City Council.
"This year we had the idea to really get people so
close to the paintings that you see every brush stroke and
get to know every detail, and that is how we came up with
the idea of the Drer puzzle," she added.
The large jigsaw puzzle on the steps of the church in
the artist's home town was started by volunteers and
members of the public on Friday (August 5) and was to be
finished by Saturday night (August 6). The individual
pieces are 45 x 38 centimetres and anyone who felt like
taking on the challenge could try and fit them into the
famous painting, even children who were not much bigger
than the pieces themselves.
"I think it is better than a small jigsaw puzzle,
because you can't walk on a small puzzle, and hundreds of
people can't work on it, you would be finished
immediately," said Rebecca Albert. "It is actually quite
hard, but it is still a lot of fun," Lea Pluske agreed.
"I think it is cool, I have already done a thousand
piece puzzle, and this is much cooler because the thousand
piece puzzle was so small," said Jonas Fries.
Germany's most famous artist, Duerer (1471-1528) was
born in the Nuremberg town centre and lived and worked
there. Many of his masterpieces were inspired there, such
as "A Young Hare", "Nuremberg Woman Dressed for Church" and
numerous landscapes. Nuremberg's town council dedicates
events to it's most famous son every year.
