- Story Text: Russians mark the Orthodox Epiphany with outdoor
baptism ceremonies in sub-zero conditions.
Russians marked the Orthodox Epiphany on Tuesday
(January 18) with church services and outdoor baptism
ceremonies in sub-zero temperatures across the country.
In the Eastern church tradition, the Epiphany
commemorates the baptism of the adult Christ, when John the
Baptist christened the 30-year-old Jesus in the River
Jordan nearly 2,000 years ago. It is one of the key events
in the Russian religious calendar.
At the Troitsa Lykova Church near Moscow on Tuesday, a
cross-shaped hole was cut in the Moscow River ice for the
Epiphany ceremony. The Russians call the hole 'Jordania'
after the river in which Christ was baptised.
Priests bless the waters, which Russians believe then
has special healing qualities and they administer it to
heal spiritual ailments.
"This (Epiphany baptism dip) helps with all ailments
and all sickness and purifies the soul," said Gennady, one
believer taking a dip.
"All around the water is being blessed today and if a
person takes this cold plunge, he will remain healthy. Even
old women are coming here to take the plunge. I recommend
it to everybody as this helps renew a person."
Many Russians take containers of the water and keep it
at home for the year. It is customary to drink a little in
the mornings on an empty stomach. Priests recommend that
the holy water be sprinkled on food products and other
household goods.
