- Story Text: U.S. forces continue to pound areas in the city of
Falluja.
U.S. forces pounded targets in the city of Falluja
late on Sunday night (November 21), in a bid to stamp
out remaining resistance in the city, a long-time safe
haven for insurgents.
Explosions rocked the city after midnight as bombing
spilled over the early hours on Monday and smoke could be
seen rising from Jolan district and the central area of the
city.
The eight-day U.S.-led assault on Falluja killed what
U.S. commanders said were more than 1,000 foreign militants
and Saddam Hussein loyalists and reduced parts of the
western city to rubble.
Houses were flattened by air strikes and artillery and
damaged buildings that are still standing may not be safe.
Bodies are still being removed from rubble-strewn streets.
More than 10,000 U.S. troops with Iraqi allies mounted
a major offensive on Falluja two weeks ago, killing some
1,200 fighters and taking more than 1,000 prisoners. U.S.
commanders say some leading militants probably escaped the
city, however.
