- Story Text: The first female recruits to join the German army have
been sworn in with their male colleagues in a much vaunted
ceremony in Goslar.
Germany's first female recruits were sworn into the
German army along with their male counterparts on Friday
(January 2).
Altogether 318 new recruits were sworn in to the 1st
Airforce Training Regiment in Goslar, only eight were women,
but that's a big step forward for them. There are already 37
women in the Training Regiment, but previously they weren't
allowed to take up arms, and could only serve in the musical
and medical formations.
Germany changed it's policy after one woman sued and won
a European Court decision last January for the right to serve
in combat forces.
Annett Becker is 19 and is one of the first recruits who
joined on January 1st. Her father is in the army and had
always spoken highly about it, but she came to the decision
herself. She says there is no animosity towards the female
recruits and that they all get jolly well together. As to
whether the men are better, she says all you can do is give it
your best.
"It's true that men have more muscles (laughs), but as a woman you
try and keep up, and up to now I've succeeded," she said
So far she's managed to keep up with the men. Her proud
mum, Rita, wishes she could have done the same, but doubts she
would have been brave enough.
