- Story Text: The 1st Armoured Division in Germany has received
orders to deploy to the Gulf region.
Last weekend U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld
gave the order to deploy U.S. troops to the Gulf region.
That means for the 1st Armoured Division to get ready to
leave any day for the U.S. Central Command area of
responsibility in support of the global war on terrorism and
to prepare contingencies as may be directed.
The mood among the soldiers is one of nervousness but they
are also aware of of their sense of duty.
Staff Sergeant William Cole said "I would rather take
care of this myself than to send my child in 20-30 years."
"This is my first deployment. I'm just a little nervous.
I'll just go over there and do what I have to do. Hopefully we
all come back safely, said one soldier, Jennifer Larry.
And Sergeant Victor Gwynn said: "My family is very scared.
They are kind of sceptical and don't want me to go. But they
know I'm in the army and I need to do my job.
And he added: "They know what I signed up for. My wife
knows. It's kind of hard to tell your children that, they are
very small. But I don't lie to my kids at all. When it's time
for me to go they'll understand it's what daddy needs to do."
Headquartered in Wiesbaden, the 1st Armoured Division
consists of approximately 13.000 solders. It has bases in
Fiedberg, Giessen, Hanau and Fort Riley near the border to
Luxembourg.
Press officer Greg Withrowg said that the 1st Armoured
Division is trained to fulfil a variety of roles - from combat
missions to peace sustaining missions.
And although he could not reveal its exact role in any
coming conflict, he said that the 1st Armoured Division was in
combat in Operation Desert Storm, during the Gulf War of 1991.
