- Story Text: Russian Patriarch receives holy Mother of Kazan icon
from Catholic church.
Russian Patriarch Alexiy II has received the icon
"Mother of God of Kazan" from a cardinal in the Catholic
church in a move aimed to heal a 1,000 year-old rift in the
two Christian churches.
The "Mother of God of Kazan" icon is believed to be
a miracle-working icon by Orthodox believers and thought by
some to be connected to the third apocalyptic revelation of
Fatima.
Experts and church officials disagree over whether the
icon is a 17th or 18th century copy of the missing 16th
century original. Most believe it was smuggled out of
Russia in the early 20th century. It resurfaced and was
given to the Catholic Church and Pope John Paul II has
hung it above his desk since 1993.
The 84-year-old pope had expressed the desire to
personally return the icon, but his trip has never been
approved by the Russian Orthodox Church. President Vladimir
Putin met the pope last year but did not invite him to
visit Russia.
Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexiy II has accused the
Catholic Church of poaching Orthodox believers since the
fall of communism, although the split runs back to 1054
when the Eastern and Western branches of Christianity split
in the Great Schism.
