- Story Text: The Head of the Arab League Amr Moussa says Iraq's
U.S.-backed Governing Council is a step towards
establishing a legitimate Iraqi government.
Arab foreign ministers meeting at the Arab League
headquarters in Cairo on Tuesday (August 5) expressed
support for both members and non-members of Iraq's
U.S.-appointed Governing Council.
Addressing the media on Tuesday Bahrain Foreign Minister
Sheikh Mohammed Ben Mubarak al-Khalifa said, "We are ready
to receive any Iraqi to meet with us from the council or
outside the council, the Arab league or individually with
the states ... so to answer your question the door is open
for the members and non members."
Iraq's U.S-backed Governing Council named a Shi'ite
politician as its first leader on July 30 after adopting a
rotating presidency which will give representatives of all
major groups a turn at being in charge.
Baghdad officials recently said that among the top
priorities of the council was taking responsibilities from
the occupying forces, achieving political independence and
working out a constitution, besides restoring security and
stability.
Head of the Arab League, Amr Moussa, speaking at the
press conference in Cairo said, "The issue is that the
council -- the transitional ruling council -- is considered
a step or a start that must pave the way for establishing a
legitimate national Iraqi government which can be
recognised and communicated with".
"To be sure, Iraq is an Arab country based on national
unity and that we must try to work quickly to end the
occupation and create an Iraqi national government," added
Moussa.
