- Story Text: U.S. forces in Iraq have arrested a man they claim
was an officer in Saddam Hussein's regime.
U.S. troops in the Iraqi town of Baquba arrested a
man on Thursday (September 4), they said was a senior Iraqi
Intelligence Officer under deposed President Saddam
Hussein's regime.
The soldiers, from the 4th Infantry Division (ID),
believe Colonel Maher Abas Emir was spying for supporters
of Saddam and may have been involved in recent attacks on
U.S. forces.
They raided Emir's house in the centre of Baquba, after
an Iraqi informant told them of his whereabouts.
He was then taken to the central police station for
questioning.
Ten other Iraqis were arrested during the raid. The
soldiers believe they were attending a meeting.
The 588 engineers, 2nd Brigade of the 4th ID have
arrested more than 100 people they say were connected to
the old regime since their sweeping operations began.
