- Story Text: Shortage of supplies and equipment at Najaf's only
working hospital.
Dozens of wounded from lie in Najaf's al-Hakim
hospital, the only working hospital in the town after the
al-Sadr was taken over by Iraqi police as a base during the
recent fighting.
Hospital workers complain of a lack of equipment and
medicines despite a pledge from the interim government of
immediate aid.
"Our hospital needs equipment and medicine if the
al-Sadr hospital stays closed for a long period. Our
hospital has just specific department, it's not a general
hospital," said Hussein Ha'adi, the hospital's
administrative assistant.
"Our hospital cannot provide all the services for the
people of the province because we don't have the
equipment," he continued.
During the fighting, the hospital was not just short of
supplies, but in danger itself.
"A lot of us (medics) were injured. A lot of ambulances
were hit," said Mohammed Hassan, a medic.
"I mean when we go to a site it's very hard for us. We
don't know where we're being hit from. One day we came to
the hospital, we were sitting with other drivers and a
mortar hit us. Four were wounded and one killed."
Wounded have also been taken to the al-Fourat al-Awsat
hospital in nearby Kufa, about seven kilometres away, but
facilities are nowhere near sufficient to meet demand.
