- Story Text: West German Opposition leader Rainer Barzel, opening the three day election conference of his Christian Democrat party (CDU), on Monday (9 Oct.) attacked the economic polices and 'Ostpolitik' of Chancellor Willy Brandt.
Dr. Barzel warned that the county faced a slide into socialism if it returned Herr Brandt in the general election, to be hold prematurely, no November 19.
He said the opposition would concentrate on economic arguments in its efforts to unseat the Social Democratic-Liberal coalition of Chancellor Brandt.
Dr. Barzel said three years of Brandt government had resulted in the greatest price rises and lowest real wage improvements since world war two; chaotic state finances and higher taxes; and a failure to carry out educational reforms.
