- Story Text: Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji winds up his three-day
landmark visit to Nepal and leaves for the Maldives, the next
leg of his five-nation Asian tour.
Zhu, who visited the Patan museum in the capital
Kathmandu on Tuesday (May 15), also met the Nepalese monarch,
King Birendra and prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala.
The Chinese premier was accorded a ceremonial guard of
honour before he left for the Maldives.
Koirala bid farewell to Zhu at the airport before he
boarded a special China Air jetliner for the Maldives from
where he goes to Sri Lanka and Thailand. He has already
visited Pakistan.
Nepal's Foreign Ministry said in a statement after the
visit that it has asked Zhu to treat its products
preferentially so as to boost exports to China.
Prime Minister Koirala made the request during talks with
Zhu, who promised to send trade officials to look into the
request.
Nepal exported goods worth just 1.86 million rupees
(US$25,000) to mainland China in 1999/00 (mid-July to
mid-July) and imported Chinese goods worth 8.34 billion
rupees.
Zhu, in his talks with government officials and business
leaders, explored ways to boost trade and economic cooperation
with Nepal and secured his tiny neighbour's renewed assurance
that it would not allow moves by Tibetan exiles against
Beijing.
During the visit, Nepal and China signed six economic
cooperation agreements including one for the construction of a
strategic road across the Himalayas linking the Nepali capital
with Tibet to promote trade and tourism.
Other pacts included Chinese support for a hospital and
polytechnic school, and an agreement to end double taxation
that is expected to bring more investment to cash-starved
Nepal.
Beijing, which provides US$10 million annually to
Kathmandu, is a major aid donor to Nepal.
Anxious to ensure the visit passed off smoothly, the
kingdom had asked 20,000 Tibetans living in Nepal not to
organise anti-China demonstrations.
The Tibetans have been living in Nepal since fleeing in
1959 after a failed uprising against Chinese rule of the
Himalayan region led by the Dalai Lama who now lives in India.
