- Story Text: Millions of visitors have turned up from all over the
world to watch the traditional carnival street processions in
Germany.
The German carnival started in the southern town of
Rottweil on Monday (March 3) while the rest of Germany was
still
sleeping after their weekend parties.
At eight oclock in the morning the fools come out in
Rottweil, where they have jumped down the streets using long
sticks since 1888. This year 4,000 fools jumped down the
streets to the delight of more than 35,000 spectators, the
vast majority tourists, and handed out sweets and strokes of
their cows tails on poles.
The more famous traditional highlight of Rose Monday is
the street parade in Cologne with its bright traditional
costumes and satirical floats (carnival wagons). At exactly
11.11 (CET) 10,000 people dressed as fools made their way
through the town centre, among them 129 music bands. The 6.5
kilometer long procession took seven hours to pass through,
but they were cheered along the entire way by around a million
revellers from all over the world.
Carnival has various origins, stemming from the Roman
tradition of celebrating the onset of spring and ancient
Germanic fertility rites, which were later adopted by
Christians as a way to usher in the fasting period before
Easter.
It also has a tradition of poking fun at authority with
parades of carnival floats satirising the political parties.
The German Chancellor Gerhard Schoeder was mocked over
election promises this year, but he got off lightly, the
opposition Christian Democrats were depicted as snails.
