- Story Text: More than 100 U.S. soldiers have arrived in the
Philippines to take part in joint training exercises with
colleagues from the Philippines army. These latest arrivals
join hundreds of other U.S troops in other parts of the vast
archipelago who are training and fighting alongside their
counterparts against Muslim rebel groups in the south of the
island chain.
The latest contingent of U.S soldiers arrived aboard a
commercial flight on Tuesday (April 22) at Clark Air Base,
north of Manila, which used to be controlled by the United
States before Washington gave the airfield and a naval station
at Subic Bay back to the Philippines in the early 1990s.
The soldiers will train alongside their Philippine
counterparts in "Exercise Balikatan 2003", Filipino for
"shoulder-to-shoulder".
The latest group brings the total of U.S. forces in the
Philippines to approximately 1,000. Some of the US soldiers
have taken up controversial combat roles alongside Philippine
soldiers fighting rebel Muslims in the southern islands of the
predominantly Catholic republic.
