- Story Text: Serbian opposition leader Vuk Draskovic has survived a
gun-attack at his home in Montenegro. His wife has accused
Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic of trying to kill him.
A tearful Danica Draskovic on Friday (June 16) showed
reporters bullet holes and bloodstains in the room where she
said Draskovic had narrowly survived a volley of fire from the
unknown assassin.
Danica Draskovoic explained that the leader of the Serbian
Renewal Movement did not have any police protection at the
time of the attack, and that she could not understand how
Montenegro's Interior Ministry had not assigned a protection
squad.
She said: "I would like to ask him now what happened and
why did he first say that he did not need special protection.
All this is very uncivilised," she said.
The head of the press office of Draskovic's party
headquarters in Belgrade told reporters that the gunman had
fired several volleys through a window.
"Vuk was hit by two bullets, but fortunately he was only
slightly wounded," she said.
Draskovic was treated in hospital in Kotor, which, like
Budva, is a resort on Montenegro's Adriatic coast.
Belgrade's independent Beta news agency quoted a hospital
spokesman as saying the Draskovic was later discharged from
the hospital at his own request after treatment for minor head
wounds.
Thursday's shooting follows a string of mysterious
assassinations of officials and underworld figures in
Belgrade. Earlier this month, the security adviser to
Montenegro's pro-Western president was also gunned down.
Another leader of Serbia's fragmented opposition said the
latest attack was yet more proof that violence had overtaken
the political scene, Beta news agency reported.
