We are concerned because if this material falls into the wrong hands could contribute to some nuclear weapons programme and we've not yet been provided with information by either the Iraqi authorities or other authorities to assure us that the material is in responsible hands." 1.32 6. - Story Text: The IAEA says that equipment and materials that could be
used to make atomic weapons has been disappearing
from Iraq.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
said on Tuesday (October 12) that equipment and material
that could be used to make atomic weapons has gone missing
from Iraq.
"We are concerned because if this material falls into
the wrong hands could contribute to some nuclear weapons
programme and we've not yet been provided with information
by either the Iraqi authorities or other authorities to
assure us that the material is in responsible hands," said
IAEA spokesman Mark Gwozdecky.
The agency's findings raised fears that the U.S.-led
war aimed at disarming Iraq may have unleashed a
proliferation crisis, if looters sold nuclear equipment.
United Nations inspectors visited the Tuwaitha nuclear
research centre in June 2003 to determine whether refined
uranium ore was missing from the looted nuclear complex
near Baghdad. The task force discovered some looted barrels
once used to store processed uranium, but did not know how
many more were missing.
