- Story Text: The crew of the 10th main expedition to the
International Space Station have completed their training
for the flight on October 11.
Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov and U.S.
astronaut Leroy Chiao will be the next, tenth crew that is
to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) on October
11th. The announcement was made at a news conference in the
Star city outside Moscow on Wednesday (September 23, 2004)
following the successful completion of the main and
standby crews pre-flight "exams". Lieutenant-Colonel Yuri
Shargin of the Space Troops will go with them on a 10-day
mission in orbit.
The exams included the entire set of operations to
prepare the spaceship for the launch, to manoeuvre it in
outer space, to dock it to the ISS manually, and to undock
and land it. The crew members had to deal with emergency
situations as well. An extra task which Sharipov and Chiao
will face is to deal with the first shuttle arrival at the
space station since the Columbia accident in February 2003
grounded the U.S. fleet. The shuttle, which is due to
arrive at the ISS in March, is to bring new American
spacesuits and a lot of equipment for the space station.
The crew will also use cameras to check the orbiter's belly
for heat shield damage.
Salizhan Sharipov, commander of the mission told
reporters, "The Shuttle flight is in the plan, it is
scheduled for March 6th and the docking is scheduled for
March 8, 2005. We have been trained both in Houston and
here, so when Shuttle arrives we can work together onboard
of the ISS."
And U.S. astronaut Leroy Chiao, who is also to fly on
the mission said how the two countries had worked together
on the ISS programme. "We were all very upset after the
Challenger or the Columbia accident, excuse me, both
personally and professionally," said Chiao, "there were
some challenges, but I think what it really did in the end
it strengthened our relationship and we really learned how
to go through some hard times together."
The veteran space explorer Leroy Chiao has flown aboard
the shuttle three times, including a trip to the ISS in
2000. He speaks fluent English, Mandarin and Russian and
holds a doctorate in chemical engineering.
Salizhan Sharipov flew to space for the first time in
1988 and worked aboard the Russian Mir space station.
