- Story Text: Bosnian Serbs across Republika Srpska celebrated into
the early hours of Monday morning (September 9, 2002) following
Yugoslavia's historic win over Argentina in the final of the
World Basketball Championship.
Around 2,000 Bosnian Serbs spent Sunday night and
Monday morning in the streets of Pale, in Bosnia Herzegovina,
celebrating Yugoslavia's fifth World Basketball gold medal.
Sounds of fireworks and shooting from all manner of
firearms followed the end of a dramatic basketball final which
ended in an 84-77 overtime win in Indianapolis, United States.
Hundreds of cars packed with people drove up and down the
main street of Pale.
Those who could get a car ride danced in the streets,
chanting "Yugoslavia, Yugoslavia".
Republika Srpska flags as well as Serbian ones were
everywhere.
Bosnian Serbs have close ties with Yugoslavia and most
support the Yugoslav national team selections as their own.
