- Story Text: King of Nepal meets the people of Kathmandu in the
midst of a deadly Maoist revolt aimed at overthrowing the
Hindu monarchy.
Nepal's King Gyanendra walked among his people for
three hours in the picturesque city of Patan on Wednesday
(September 22, 2005), accompanied by his queen, Komal.
Meanwhile more than 10,000 people marched for peace in
the Nepali capital, seeking an end to a brutal civil war
that has cost thousands of lives in the revolt-racked
Himalayan nation.
Students, teachers, party activists, rights workers and
members of citizens' groups carried placards and banners as
they marched demanding an immediate end to the conflict
that has killed more than 12,500 people.
Impoverished Nepal is battling a deadly Maoist revolt
aimed at overthrowing the Hindu monarchy. The Maoists want
to install a single party communist state in the scenic
nation, home to the Mount Everest and the birthplace of
Lord Buddha.
The declaration of truce by the Maoists, who model
themselves on the revolutionary Chinese leader Mao Zedong,
is seen as a ploy to woo the main political parties
opposing King Gyanendra who fired the government in
February.
The king said he was forced to make the move because
the government had failed to crush the Maoist revolt.
His royalist government says it cannot trust the rebels
who broke past ceasefires in 2001 and 2003 and has ignored
pressures to declare a truce.
