- Story Text: Tension's are high in Haiti's capital one day after
hundreds of prisoners broke out of the national penitentiary.
Haiti's capital was tense on Sunday (February 20, 2005)
one day after 481 prisoners broke out of the national
penitentiary.
U.N. peacekeepers from Pakistan, Brazil and Jordan took
up positions around the facility in Port au Prince on
Sunday, while hundreds of prisoners' relatives gathered
outside awaiting news of their loved ones.
"Where is my son? I am the one who gives him his food
and drink. I am his mother and his father. His father
died. He's called Jackson Noel," said one prisoner's
worried mother.
Gunmen stormed Haiti's main prison on Saturday
(February 19) and drove away with jailed former Prime
Minister Yvon Neptune and other inmates linked to ousted
ex-President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Neptune was later
recaptured by police, Haitian Police Spokeswoman Dr. Gesso
Coicou told Reuters by telephone.
Neptune and former Interior Minister Jocelerme Privert
appeared to have been taken out at gunpoint by the attackers.
Witnesses say they saw poorly armed prison guards
fleeing the penitentiary. One off-duty prison guard was
killed in the incident.
Neither the police nor the interim government, which
jailed Neptune and Privert on charges of violence, made any
statement on the prison break.
The government is pitted against street gangs still
loyal to Aristide, and its once warm relations with former
soldiers who helped lead the revolt against Aristide have
chilled under their repeated demands for the
re-establishment of the army.
