- Story Text: The world famous Nuremberg Christmas market has
opened and Christmas spirit, good will and mulled wine is
flowing.
One of the first highlights of the Christmas
calendar, the traditional opening ceremony of the
Christkindlmarkt took place under perfect winter conditions
on Friday (28 November).
Several thousand children with hand-made lanterns wound
their way through the throngs of visitors from all over the
globe to the Castle Hill, where a Christmas pageant was
performed.
The Christ Child (Das Christkindl) recites a poem from
a balcony over the world famous Christmas fair and the
candle-light procession of Nuremberg's school children
makes its way through the streets.
This year around 185 booths and stands have been set up
on the central market square. The resulting lanes of stalls
have have a sales frontage of up to 940 running meters and
a sales area of about 2500 square metres.
The selection of wares to be offered in these stalls is
kept consciously traditional. Forty booths are devoted to
retailing Nuremberg's famous "lebkuchen" (gingerbread),
fruit cake and other baked goods and candies. Two zones
are reserved for typical Christmas articles such as gold
foil angels, nativity scenes, Christmas-tree ornaments and
candles. And of course, there are stalls selling mulled
wine, grilled Nuremberg sausages, toys and handicrafts. A
noted speciality are the so-called "prune men", colourful
figures made of dried fruits, which are popular souvenirs
of the Christmas market.
In addition to the stalls, around 150 concerts,
performances and other special events accompany the world
famous Christkindlesmarkt, including the 'Children's
Christmas Land' which turn the metropolis of Nuremberg into
Europe's number one Christmas City.
More than 2,000,000 visitors were tallied at last
year's Christkindlesmarkt. Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt
now also serves as a model for other cities. Each year,
delegations from
all over Germany and abroad visit the market to study its
organization and become acquainted with its formula for
success.
The city holds to its tried-and-true concept in other
regards, as well. Neither now nor in future will visitors
to Nuremberg find either amusement-park entertainment or
"canned"
Christmas music in the immediate vicinity of the
Christkindlesmarkt.
The decorative ceramic mugs in which mulled wine is
sold (an idea which has gained wide popular acceptance
throughout Germany since its introduction in 1989) have
become much-loved collector's items. Nearly 80% of these
mugs, which show a different motif each year, are now taken
home by tourists as souvenirs of their visit to Nuremberg's
world-famous Christkindlesmarkt.
