- Story Text: Sixty-six year old Romanian woman defends her
decision to have a baby.
A 66 year-old Romanian woman who reportedly became
the world's oldest woman on Tuesday (January 18) defended
her decision to give birth to a little girl against
mounting criticism, saying she was a mother like any other.
Adriana Iliescu, an university professor and author of
children books, gave birth on Sunday (January 16) to a baby
girl after doctors used in vitro- fertilisation and sperm
and eggs from younger people, an act slammed by the
Romanian Orthodox Church as selfish and which stirred
debate in the local press.
The Health Ministry said in a statement it did not
encourage such interventions on persons who are above the
fertility age.
Iliescu had been pregnant with twin girls but one of
them did not survive and doctors decided to perform a
caesarean section in the 33rd week of pregnancy to save the
other, who weighs 1.4 kg.
Doctors said the little girl, named Eliza-Maria, should
stay in hospital about six weeks until she weighs 2 kg.
