- Story Text: A Serbian journalist jailed earlier in the year for
reporting on alleged war crimes by Serbian troops in Kosovo
has been freed in yet another sign of the lifting of
repression following the ousting of Slobodan Milosevic.
Miroslav Filipovic, 49, was sentenced on July 28 to
seven years imprisonment on espionage charges by a
military court in Nis, 220km south of Belgrade.
Western government and human rights organizations had
condemned his sentencing.
The Yugoslav news agency Tanjug said a new trial had been
ordered because the sentencing court had violated procedure.
Upon his release, Filipovic was greeted by his wife,
Slavica, and thanked those who had campaigned for his release
and hoped all other political prisoners would be freed.
Filipovic worked for the independent daily Danas and was a
stringer for Agence France Presse, a French news agency. He
also reported for the London based Institute for War and Peace
Reporting. He was arrested last May.
Filipovic was later greeted by the mayor of Nis, Zoran
Zivkovic, a long time opposition supporter during the reign of
Slobodan Milosevic.
Two British policemen, a Canadian and four Dutch held on
security charges have been freed in the last week.
