- Story Text: Dutch emergency services are searching for six U.S.
and Turkish maintenance workers after scaffolding collapsed
at a power plant.
Dutch emergency services scrambled to rescue six
Turkish and U.S. maintenance workers who plunged into a
boiler at a power plant after scaffolding collapsed on
Sunday (September 28)
Police said they were concerned the six workers could
have been killed or seriously injured in the fall.
Eight workers, four Turks and four U.S. citizens, were
sandblasting the inside of the steam boiler at Essent
Energie's coal-fired power plant near the town of Breda
when the scaffolding collapsed in the early hours of Sunday
morning.
Two were rescued from the boiler, which was not in use,
and taken to hospital. One of the rescued men was seriously
injured. The other was not seriously hurt, police said.
Rescue crews using ropes, mirrors and cameras made
contact with two men and were searching for four others
trapped under collapsed scaffolding inside an 85-metre
(280-foot) deep boiler at the Amercentrale plant in the
southern Netherlands.
"We are trying to save the casualties by using
mountaineering skills and we are using cameras and mirrors
to locate the people", said regional police spokesman
Jeroen Steenmeijer.
It is very difficult for the rescue workers to find the
victims, because of the rubble of collapsed scaffolding and
floor boards inside the boiler.
Ambulance crews set up a field hospital at the site in
Geertruidenberg, near Breda. A rescue helicopter was on
standby. Police said they had informed the U.S and Turkish
embassies about the accident.
"We do not know the cause of the accident, at this
moment we concentrate on rescuing those people. So, I think
it will take a long time before we know what exactly
happened, but at this moment we have other priorities",
said Aad Atteveld, Essent Energie's managing director of
power generation.
