- Story Text: One of the world's most influential clergymen Jaime
Cardinal Sin retires
Two former Presidents joined a host of other
dignitaries for a mass at Manila's Edsa Shrine on Wednesday
(November 19) to celebrate the retirement of Jaime Cardinal
Sin - who is leaving his post as one of the world's most
influential clergymen.
Former Philippine President Fidel Ramos said that Sin
was one of the Philippines most important leaders and his
role in the overthrow of former leader Ferdinand Marcos in
1986 and the subsequent overthrow of Joseph Estrada in 2002
could not be underrated.
"I have always said and Cardinal Sin knows this, that
Edsa Uno would not have happened if there was no divine
commander in
chief," Ramos told the congregation.
Cardinal Sin was appointed in 1974 as Archbishop of the
Manila Archdiocese, the premier diocese of the country, a
post
that catapulted him into becoming one of the most powerful
voices in Philippines' politics. His sway with ordinary
Filipinos played a crucial role in the "people power
revolution" that overthrew Marcos and his advice convinced
the next president, Corazon Aquino, to run for office.
"How truly blessed Filipinos are, that God sent Jaime
Cardinal Sin to guide us and help us through all of the
difficult times. Today let us all commit ourselves to
becoming more and more like Cardinal Sin, by praying more
fervently and
by truly caring for our country and for each other," Aquino
said.
Despite the separation of Church and State, politicians
have often sought Cardinal Sin's endorsement during
elections and elected presidents often visit the
Archbishop's Palace to ask for his blessings.
Cardinal Sin's failing health and his request to Rome
for the partition of the Archdiocese of Manila, saying it
had become "too big, too extensive, too populous and too
complex" for one bishop to handle well, were reasons given
by the church for his retirement.
But Cardinal Sin said he will continue with his work
even after his retirement.
"I am retiring but I am not keeping quiet. You can not
stop me from speaking, I am retiring but I will not stop
serving.
You can not stop me from loving and serving you," he said.
