- Story Text: Despite the fact that convoys have begun arriving in
Umm Qasr in southern Iraq carrying supplies of water, local
hospitals are still struggling to cope with the amount of
patients seeking treatment for injuries and dehydration.
Convoys started arriving in the area on Wednesday
(March 26) with tank-loads of long-awaited water.
Residents suffering from dehydration have been filing into
the local hospital.
"The main problems in the town is regarding the water
supply, food stuffs, electricity. It's the main problem for
them. And the safety also is not secured in the town until
now. From time to time there is firing and from time to time
there are people wounded and being shifted to this hospital.
I'm not guaranteed about the safety in the road -- the road to
Basra, but not in the town itself," doctor W.J. Al-Shehby at
the local hospital in Umm Qasr said.
An aid tank supplied by the U.S. military arrived at the
hospital to supply it with water later on Wednesday.
The U.S. Navy has announced that minesweepers had cleared
a channel to Umm Qasr that would allow aid ships to arrive
soon.
Three trucks of food, three of water and one of mixed
supplies drove in from neighbouring Kuwait after a heavy
sandstorm forced organisers to scale back original plans to
send 30 trucks.
U.S. and British forces sought to capture Umm Qasr, Iraq's
only deep-water port situated on the border with Kuwait, soon
after invading Iraq last Thursday (March 20), but resistance
by Iraqi troops and militiamen continued until Tuesday (March
25).
A U.S. military police escort accompanied the Kuwaiti
convoy.
The aid will be handed over to U.S. Marines in Umm Qasr.
A British ship carrying 231 tonnes of food, medicine,
blankets and fresh water is expected to arrive in the next day
or two at Umm Qasr following demining of sea lanes.
The major demining push at Umm Qasr is said to be complete
and a sea lane to the port has been cleared.
Though an exact timetable is not yet clear, ships should
be able to berth at the port very soon.
