- Story Text: American, Russian and German troops are among 13
nations training in marine operations along the Polish
coast.
More than 5000 personnel, 38 ships, 3 submarines and
35 aircraft from NATO and Partnership For Peace affiliated
nations are taking part in annual peacetime exercises in
the Baltic Sea - called BALTOPS 2004.
In Wednesday's (June 16) exercise a landing force
comprising mainly of Russian, German and U.S. troops landed
on the beaches of the Ustka military training grounds.
Their purpose was to secure the landing ground and move
inland to evacuate civilians from a hostile area. Anti-riot
and medical evacuation drills were also part of the
exercise.
BALTOPS is an annual, international sea exercise with
the main purpose of increasing the level of cooperation
between the naval forces of the NATO 'Partnership for
Peace' members in the Baltic region.
During the exercises, ships practiced elements of
peacekeeping operations including sea blockades of the
crisis areas, peace enforcement and "anti-terrorism"
actions as well as fighting smuggling at sea.
