- Story Text: Clashes between U.S. troops and insurgents continued
for the second day west of Mosul .
A fierce gunbattle broke out in the town of Tal Afar
between U.S. troops and militants in the early hours of
Thursday morning (March 24, 2005), killing two civilians,
witnesses said.
U.S. troops have been battling to keep order in the
town, 60 km (40 miles) west of Mosul. Clashes erupt
frequently between U.S. forces and militants.
There were no immediate report from the U.S. forces on
casualties.
Last summer, American forces launched an offensive on
Tal Afar in an attempt to strangle the insurgency's
re-supply routes.
