- Story Text: Two days before the German federal election which
continues to be too close to call, the leading candidates have
closed out their campaigns with rousing rallies among their
party faithful.
German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder ended his election
tour on Friday (September 20) in the western industrial state
of North-Rhine Westphalia, a traditional stronghold of the
centre-left Social Democratic Party.
Meantime, Schroeder's challenger, Bavarian
Minister-Presdient Edmund Stoiber, finished his quest for the
Chancellery in Berlin, also cheered on by thousands of
supporters.
In Dortmund, Schroeder took a verbal stab at his
opponents, telling the crowd that the Christian Democrats are
not fit to govern the country.
"Our political opponents talk badly about this country.
But those who are so negative about things -- they are not
good governors. They may want to govern, but they aren't
capable of governing," said Schroeder.
Stoiber concluded his campaign with a rousing speech to
supporters in Berlin, telling them that it is the Christian
Democrats who have the courage to seize power and do something
for the country.
On Sunday (September 22) about 60 million Germans will go
to the polls to choose their next Bundestag and Chancellor.
Two last-minute polls showed Schroeder clinging to the
thinnest of leads, although it was far from certain the SPD
and their junior coalition partners, the Greens, would win
enough seats to stay in power.
A Forsa poll for RTL television found Schroeder's SPD
would win 38.5-39.5 percent, down from 40 a week ago.
Challenger Edmund Stoiber's conservatives had 37-38 percent,
down from 38.
A projection by the rival Allensbach group had the SPD
reversing a deficit to take a 37.5 percent to 37.0 percent
lead.
The surveys seemed to confirm expectations that the
election would be among the closest in post-war history, and
gave little indication whether Germany would be governed next
by the same centre-left coalition, a centre-right one under
Stoiber, or even an alliance between both major parties.
