- Story Text: Once again shelling has erupted in the town of Tetovo
as two ethnic Albanians killed by Macedonian police were
buried in the mainly ethnic Albanian town in northwestern
Macedonia.
Macedonian guns fired on rebel-held hills overlooking
Tetovo on Friday (March 23), ignoring a unilateral ceasefire
declared by the guerrillas on Wednesday in an apparent effort
to delay a threatened government assault.
Fighting broke out in another region between Macedonian
forces and Albanian rebels in an area some 15 kilometres from
the Macedonian capital Skopje in the village of Gracani.
Rebels occupied the village and wounded a policeman.
A funeral was held for two ethnic Albanians shot dead on
Thursday.
The Albanians died in a hail of bullets as they tried to
throw a grenade into a machine-gun post.
In a bid to starve the guerrillas of supplies, Serbian
troops were last week allowed into a 25-square-kilometre area
in southern Serbia at the junction of its border with
Macedonia and the boundary of Kosovo.
A NATO official said the alliance had given permission to
General Carlo Cabigiosu, the Italian general in charge of KFOR
peacekeepers in Kosovo, to hand parts of the five-km
(three-mile) wide zone over to Serbian forces from this
weekend.
The move is part of NATO's phased plan to allow Serbian
forces back into the buffer zone from which they have been
excluded since 1999 under a NATO-Belgrade agreement ending an
alliance bombing campaign that drove Serbian forces from
Kosovo.
Serbian soldiers will face tight regulations on the type
of equipment they could take into the areas.
In the past year, ethnic Albanian guerillas have used
parts of the buffer zone, or Ground Safety Zone, as a safe
haven from which to base their attacks on forces in Serbia and
northern Macedonia.
