- Story Text: Several thousand pro-Milosovic supporters gathered in
Podgorica to mark the first anniversary of NATO air strikes on
the Montenegrin capital.Serbia claims more than a thousand
people lost their lives in NATO airstrikes.
Two thousand people gathered in Podgorica to
demonstrate support for the Milosevic regime, on the eve of
the anniversary of NATO bombing campaign on Yugoslavia (23
March).
The rally was heavily guarded by police in order to
prevent incidents between citizens loyal to the current
Montenegrin government of Milo Djukanovic and those who are
pro-Yugoslavia supporters of Yugoslav president Slobodan
Milosovic.
Some participants held pictures of Milosovic, shouting
anti-NATO slogans and pro-Milosovic slogans.
Late on Thursday evening (23 March), an effigy of US
President Bill Clinton, with a US flag draped over his
shoulder, was doused in petrol and set alight, in protest at
NATO attacks.
NATO's military and political leaders were due to arrive
in Kosovo on Friday (24 March) to mark the passing of one year
since the alliance began its bombing campaign to end Serb
repression of ethnic Albanians.
