- Date: 22nd June 2004
- Summary: ALMANCIL, PORTUGAL (JUNE 22, 2004) (REUTERS - NO ACCESS WIRELESS) 1. WIDE OF RUDI VOELLER, GERMANY COACH, SPEAKING AT NEWS CONFERENCE 2. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RUDI VOELLER, GERMANY COACH SAYING: "There is only one piece of new information which is that Bastian Schweinsteiger could only do running exercises yesterday. He was being treated last night and we all assume, including myself, that he will be part of the final training tonight. The other two in poor condition, Bernd Schneider and Didi Hamann, were able to participate in everything yesterday which is why I am counting on their participation tomorrow." 3. CAMERAMAN FILMING 4. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RUDI VOELLER, GERMANY COACH SAYING: "As we have seen during the first two games, Bastian Schweinsteiger did very well and there is definitely a chance that he will be playing from the beginning. Surely it will depend somewhat on his state of fitness but we have a training session this afternoon and first I want to talk to the individual players who will end up playing or not playing and therefore, there is one more night left, plus the discussion this evening -- so we will still wait a little and see." 5. REPORTER TAKING NOTES 6. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RUDI VOELLER, GERMANY COACH SAYING: "I think if we apply the same kind of passion that we displayed during the first game and to some extent during the second game -- although it surely was a very different game -- if we approach this game in such a way I am absolutely sure that we can succeed tomorrow." 7. WIDE OF REPORTERS AND PHOTOGREPHERS 8. (SOUNDBITE) (German) RUDI VOELLER, GERMANY COACH SAYING: "The Czech players playing tomorrow will of course be extremely tough on themselves. That's only normal. They have nothing to give away. They want to prove to their own coach and everyone else that maybe it was unjustified that some did not get to play during the first few games. That way they can improve their own market value a little bit. This is the platform to prove it and they will do everything to make our lives as difficult as possible. Everyone wants to do that, despite reports that some are playing in the Bundesliga. To make life difficult for the Germans is a nice feeling for any team or country and we must know that and take into consideration that someone wants to take something away from us. There is somebody out there who wants to take something away from us so we must do everything that the adversary won't succeed. Tomorrow we must integrate this passion and this drive into our game, no matter who ends up playing in the Czech team." 9. PAN ACROSS NEWS CONFERENCE 10. (SOUNDBITE) (German) MICHAEL BALLACK SAYING: "It's an explosive duel and they have said there is still an outstanding bill and that's why I'm counting on a very difficult game. They have indicated this during their first two games. I am looking forward to a nice football match." 11. WIDE OF NEWS CONFERENCE Initials Script is copyright Reuters Limited. All rights reserved

- Story Text: German coach Rudi Voeller reported Dietmar Hamann
was fit to play against the Czech Republic.
Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has resumed
training after nursing a sore thigh and is fit to play in
Wednesday's Euro 2004 Group D decider against the Czech
Republic, coach Rudi Voeller said on Tuesday (June 22).
Hamann, who plays an important part in Voeller's system,
had missed a couple of training sessions because of a
bruised thigh.
Fellow midfielder Bernd Schneider, who had been hampered by
a calf problem, was also back in training.
The only question mark was over midfielder Bastian
Schweinsteiger, who could train only lightly on Monday
because of a painful calf.
Voeller hinted the 19-year-old Schweinsteiger, who came on
as a substitute in Germany's first two matches in the
tournament, could start Wednesday's game at Lisbon's
Alvalade stadium, providing he is fully fit.
"As we have seen during the first two games, Bastian
Schweinsteiger did very well and there is definitely a
chance that he will be playing from the beginning", Voeller
said.
Michael Ballack said he counted "on a very difficult
game" against the Czech Republic.
"It's an explosive duel and they have said there is still
an outstanding bill", Ballack said, adding "I am looking
forward to a nice football match."
Germany have to beat the Czechs to guarantee a quarter-final
spot.
