- Story Text: Leaders of Iraqi opposition groups have held a meeting
in Dukan to discuss a programme for a post-Saddam Iraq as a
conflict between U.S.-led forces and Baghdad looms.
The meeting between the Iraqi opposition groups, which
took place in Dukan in Northern Iraq, about 70 km north west
of Suleimanya, on Monday (March 10, 2003), was aimed at implementing
decisions of the Salahuddin conference, which focused on a
post-Saddam Iraq.
Members of the opposition groups, which included the
Patrotic Union Kurdistan (PUK), Kurdish Democratic Party
(KDP), the Jurdish Communits Group and others said that the
meetings so far have had positive outcomes and other meeting
are set for the future.
"This meeting was successful and the are working together
comfortably on this issue" said Kosrac Rassoul Ali, member of
the PUK.
The meeting is expected to go on for two more days.
Iraq's fractious opposition groups have been stepping up
efforts to resolve their differences and present a united
front in recent weeks as they try to stake a claim for a
leading role in any Iraqi government if Iraqi President Saddam
Hussein is removed from power.
Iraqi opposition groups have become increasingly concerned
that Washington may freeze them out of a role in a post-Saddam
Iraq and opt for a transitional period of military rule.
