- Story Text: Egypt's People's Assembly (Parliament) was told on Saturday (21 April) that the country's new government would immediately start a plan for a dynamic economic programme allied with its policy of 'Confrontation with Israel'.
Deputy Premier Dr Abdel Kader Hatem read a policy statement of the government of President and Premier Anwar Sadat that promised the Assembly a programme of home-building, improved living standard and immediate steps to and food, transport and consumer goods shortages.
Social Insurance would also be provided by the government for the three million people in Egypt still not covered by insurance laws.
Dr Hatem's address to the Assembly came on the same day as a meeting between the military chief of the Areb ??? in Cairo, at which the emphasis was on preparations for all-out war with Israel.
The Deputy Premier said 40 thousand acres (16 thousand hectares) of land would be allocated for new housing in Cairo and the government would encourage the production of popular priced clothing. More land would be set aside for fruit and vegetable growing to cure shortages and some three million small farmers would be exempted from taxation, he said.
In addition, he said importation of insecticides, fertilizers, consumer goods and medical supplies would be stepped up.
Before outlining the new government's plans for economic reforms, Dr Hatem reaffirmed Egypt's determination not to give up any territory to Israel.
Although President Sadat assumed the Premier's post just before last month's reorganisation of the cabinet, he delegated the task of presenting government policy to the Assembly to Dr Hatem.
SYNOPSIS: The new Egyptian Cabinet attended the People's Assembly on Saturday as Deputy Premier Dr Addal Kader Hatem outlined new government plans to stimulate the economy and improve living standards.
Dr Hatem was introduced by Mr. Hafez Baddawy, speaker of the Assembly.
The deputy premier said the new economic programme, allied with more house building, more production and import of consumer goods, and aeration of new transportation was all part of the policy of confrontation with Israel,
Dr Hatem reiterated that Egypt would never give up any territory to israel and he assumed the United States of Prolonging the state of war in the Middle East with its support of Israel. He said that immediate steps are begin takes to cope with shortages of consumer goods, vegetables, medical supplies, insecticides and transportational well as long-term industrial development. Initially, many needed materials would come thorough increased imports.
