- Story Text: Iraqis hope the international conference in Egypt
will stamp out the infiltration of foreign militants,
residents said.
The Iraqis, who are still suffering from lack
of security, said on Monday (November 22) they hoped an
international conference opens in the Egyptian Red Sea
resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on the political future of Iraq
would help tight controls on borders to stop infiltration
of foreign militants into Iraq.
"We, as Iraqis welcome any effort that serves Iraq and
protect its security and sovereignty, but the most
important thing now is the national reconciliation, because
bombings affect all the Iraqi people. So, we want from the
countries, especially neighbouring countries to control the
borders as all the bombings in Iraq are carried by elements
from outside," said Musadeq Rashid as he watched live
television broadcast of the conference.
Iraq asked Egypt to convene the conference in a bid to
increase world support for its battle against insurgents
and its plan to hold national elections.
More than 20 foreign ministers are expected at the
two-day conference, from the Group of Eight industrialised
countries, permanent members of the U.N. Security Council,
Iraq's neighbours and regional organisations.
"The Iraqi people had suffered for 35 years and it is
high time now to live a normal life like other Arab
countries as a one family and solve its own problems. We do
not want our Arab brothers to impose on us new ideas, they
should leave us alone to solve our problem," said Adi Abdul
Karim.
The conference will not set a deadline for the
withdrawal of the U.S.-led multinational force, as desired
by France and some Middle Eastern countries, according to a
draft copy of the final declaration.
The conference is expected to conclude by
affirming that it condemns "all acts of terrorism in Iraq
and calls for the immediate cessation of all such acts in order to
alle
viate the suffering of the Iraqi people."
