- Story Text: Indonesia and China have signed a series of memorandums
of understanding to boost economic cooperation and
bilateral ties between the two countries during Chinese
Premier Zhu Rongji's visit to capital Jakarta.
Zhu's visit, the first by a Chinese prime minister
in more than a decade, is aimed at boosting ties and trade
between the two countries.
Diplomatic ties between the two countries were broken in
1967 after Jakarta accused Beijing of backing an attempted
coup blamed on the Indonesian Communist Party, which was later
outlawed.
Relations were not restored until 1990, but intermittent
violence against Indonesia's ethnic Chinese community, which
arouses public anger in China, had strained relations between
two of the world's most populous countries.
Accompanied by an entourage of senior officials from a
range of ministries including trade, Indonesia and China put
pen to paper on Wednesday (November 7), by signing various
memorandums of understanding during Zhu's visit to capital
Jakarta.
"We have signed several memorandums of understanding
showing the cooperation between the Republic of Indonesia and
the People's Republic of China," she said, adding these
included agricultural, education and tourism pacts.
Indonesia's central bank chief, Sjahril Sabirin, also said
the Bank of China would be allowed to reopen a branch in
Jakarta after being closed since the mid-1960s.
Trade Minister Rini Soewandi added that the Chinese
government also wanted to boost cooperation on energy deals.
Zhu, in turn, said China supported Indonesia's unity in
the face of separatist rebellions and was happy with the
improvements in their bilateral relationship.
"I would like to reiterate that the Chinese government
always supports Indonesian efforts to maintain its territorial
integrity and sovereignty. We are satisfied with the bilateral
ties between Indonesia and China," he said.
After two days in Jakarta, Zhu will go to the ancient
royal city of Yogyakarta in central Java, where he will visit
the famous Buddhist temple of Borobudur.
Zhu will then travel to the resort island of Bali before
returning to China on Sunday (November 11, 2001).
