- Story Text: Liberia has said it was in talks with foreign countries
to send a force to stop fighting that has left hundreds dead,
as U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan joined calls for urgent
intervention.
Liberia's government said on Saturday (June 28) it was
talking to foreign countries, including the United States, on
deploying a force to stop fighting with rebels that has killed
hundreds in the West African country.
The announcement came as U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan
called for the urgent dispatch of a multinational force to
halt Liberia's violence.
Information Minister Reginald Goodridge told reporters
Liberia was discussing deployment of a force with the United
States as well as countries of the West African ECOWAS bloc.
He said he hoped it would happen "sooner rather than later."
Hundreds of people were killed this week before President
Charles Taylor's forces beat off a second attempt to storm the
capital, Monrovia, by rebels fighting to overthrow him.
Taylor, who was told to step down this week by U.S.
President George W. Bush, said Liberia would not hesitate to
invite in American troops to bring calm.
"This government is interested in working with Washington
on resolving this problem in the continued promotion of
democracy," he told reporters.
Annan said in a letter to the U.N. Security Council that
it should meet immediately to agree on intervention.
Most eyes in Liberia turn to the United States because of
its historical links with a country founded more than 150
years ago by freed slaves trying to establish a haven of
liberty.
But so far, U.S. officials have said there is no plan to
send peacekeepers.
First lady Jewel Taylor supervised Saturday's food
distribution.
Meanwhile youths marched for peace through the streets
chanting: "We want peace! No more war!" and held up banners
pleading for an end to the fighting.
The war has gravely affected the health of the weakest
members of society. At the national stadium, now a home for
displaced people, a nine-month old girl, Nancy Kerkula, sat
on the floor. Her mother herself an invalid said she had been
unable to feed her since she the family was forced to flee
its home.
