- Story Text: The humble British sausage, milk and even rashers of
bacon are being treated as the most dangerous form of
contraband as Dutch customs step up efforts to prevent the
virus that causes foot-and-mouth disease from entering the
Netherlands with tourists arriving on the ferry from Britain.
Drugs ? Weapons ? State secrets ? No, it's much worse:
agricultural produce from Great Britain, where foot-and-mouth
disease has created an export crisis.
For the past five days, customs at ports where the ferries
from Britain have been docking have been on a major alert for
any meat or dairy products.
With foot-and-mouth disease decimating the British farming
industry, the Dutch are taking no chances.
And nothing escapes the eagle eye of the Dutch customs.
Even the most humble ham sandwich packed at home for a Channel
crossing had to be given up when the Harwich ferry docked at
the Hook of Holland on Tuesday (February 27).
"It's packed bacon," the man protested as customs carted
his rashers off. "It's packed in England," the officer
replied.
The Netherlands are particularly worried as Europe waits
to see if the dreaded disease has spread beyond the borders of
the United Kingdom.
But for the humble British tourist, there was no
consolation.
"I have an English husband, what shall he eat for
breakfast now?" asked one woman just off the ferry.
Since January 24, the Netherlands has imported about 4,000
animals from britain, while 12,000 sheep have been imported
and exported. Thousands of animals were slaughtered last
weekend.
