- Story Text: In a re-enactment of the death of Jesus Christ, 12
devout Christians in the Philippines allowed themselves to
undergo a mock crucifixion on Good Friday.
The Philippines is a devoutly Roman Catholic country
and every Good Friday the small, sleepy town of Cutud about 80
km (50 miles) north of Manila comes alive as crowds gather to
witness a re-enactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Despite the orthodox Church frowning on the ritual, a
number of participants nail themselves to makeshift wooden
crosses for several minutes in a manifestation of faith, to
atone for sins and in some cases to seek cures for sick
relatives.
This year, 11 men and one woman underwent the ordeal of
a crucifixion, while more than 20 young men chose to be
'flagellants' - whipping their backs into a bloody smear after
being cut with a glass embedded instrument.
Shortly before he had three inch (7.5 cm) nails driven
through his hands, Robert Veles said he was doing this for his
family so his children can have a good job and life.
Some of the devoted re-enact the original crucifixion
dressed as Christ, Pontius Pilate and the Virgin Mary.
One woman, who grimaced as the nails went in, was soon
composed. Crying 'it's a miracle', she showed her healed
wound to the assembled audience.
Over a thousand people, many of them foreign tourists,
gathered to witness the bloody spectacle.
