- Story Text: Supporters of Yasser Arafat are holding a vigil
outside the hospital near Paris where the Palestinian
president is lying critically ill.
Supporters of critically ill Palestinian leader,
Yasser Arafat, have mounted a vigil outside the hospital in
Paris where he is receiving treatment.
"How do I feel? Today, I understood what the expression
'being sad to death' means. If I wasn't on camera, I would
cry," a woman said.
With all signs pointing to sharp deterioration in
Arafat's condition, Palestinians voiced worries about
losing the man they revere as the father of their
nationalist struggle, as well as the instability expected
to be ushered in by his death.
Arafat went into a coma overnight and his Jordanian
doctor said his condition was deteriorating, though
officials denied Israeli media reports that the
ex-guerrilla was brain dead.
As the night progressed, vans of police arrived at the
hospital and began to set up barriers outside the hospital.
