- Story Text: Hundreds of young people across the United States are
flocking to join the armed forces in response the horrific
terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C.
Recruitment centers for the armed forces throughout Los
Angeles are reporting a marked increase in the number of
people expressing interest in a military career on Thursday
(September 13, 2001).
At the US military entrance processing station new
recruits were going through the final process before they can
become fully fledged members of the armed forces. Many of them
were huddled around a television watching as the aftermath of
the east coast terrorist attacks continues to unfold. The new
recruits said the crisis has made them pursue their chosen
career path with renewed vigor.
The recruits, many of them still at high school, are
encouraged to take time to think about their decision. They
then meet with recruitment counsellors to decide which
division of the armed forces they want to enter and in what
role.
