- Story Text: U.S. troops tightens security measures in Sadr
city, Baghdad.
U.S troops tightened security measures around the
Shiite Sadr city, in Baghdad, as prominent Shiite leader
Sayed Muqtada Al-Sadr prepares to announce his new
government in the southern city of Najjaf on Tuesday
(October 14).
U.S army officer Adam Fluck said his troops were
looking for illegal weapons coming in and out of Sadr city.
Sadr city is a hub for at least 2 Million Shiites who
originate from the poor south, with a majority of Al-Sadr
followers.
Back in July Sayed Muqtada Al-Sadr had urged his
followers to reject the country's Governing Council.
Last week he announced a plan to establish his own
alternative government urging his supporters to express
their full support to this move.
Iraq's 25-member political body has some executive
powers such as changing laws, but the final say remains in
the hands of U.S. administrator Paul Bremer.
